The Idol

In brief: The Idol tells the inspirational true life story of Mohammad Assaf, a 22 year old wedding singer from Gaza, who became a worldwide sensation after winning the live-singing competition “Arab Idol” in 2013. Mohammad dreams of one day singing in the Cairo Opera House with his sister and best friend, Nour. Nour collapses but leaves Mohammad with a dying wish that someday, he will sing in Cairo. Escaping from Gaza to Egypt against unbelievable odds, Assaf makes the journey of a lifetime across tight border restrictions around his war-torn homeland. Since winning the contest, Assaf has toured relentlessly, been named a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador and has become a figure of hope and unity across the occupied territories and wider region. The film represents how people can create beauty from ugliness, how you can change things that are being done against you into things that are in favor of you, creating positivity from negativity.
